Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

A week ago from Thursday, I began to receive text messages and calls very early in the morning about a building that had collapsed. In my mind, it was a small piece of a building that had fallen off or an old abandoned building that gave way. As more information came in, and I discovered that the magnitude of this collapse was much larger, I got ready and responded to the scene.

When I arrived, all I could say was that the pictures and video that you see on TV pale in comparison to what I saw in front of me. The amount of rubble took my breath away. Seeing the apartments that were cut in half was difficult to process. As I stood on the side, consoling a friend whose mother was in the rubble, unknown if she was alive or dead, I witnessed firefighters climbing the debris looking for signs of life. Above them hung massive air conditioning units being held by wires. One person I was with said: “Can you imagine if that came down?” And I said, “That is what we are called to do. We go into places no one wants to go into to save someone’s life no matter who it is and no matter what the cost is to us.”

This experience has given me a new level of respect for firefighters and police officers who have selflessly given of themselves to serve others.

I ask that you continue to pray for the families, continue to pray for a miracle and for all of the first responders who are working the scene and who will continue to work for months ahead to bring closure to the families that wait to hear from them.

Humbled to serve,

Jorge
